The Regional Studies Association seeks to appoint one Editor to its journal Regional Studies, Regional Science (RSRS) for the Early Career Mentored Section.
The expertise sought by the journal is in the fields of regional planning; environmental planning; sustainability; spatial analysis; big data; climate change, and/or spatial development.
Early Careers Papers Section
Regional Studies, Regional Science has an Early Career mentored section publishing short papers from students and early career researchers (these are researchers within 5 years of the date of their PhD certificate or equivalent). The papers are selected on the basis of high-quality proposals and follow a unique process of mentored review allowing papers to be quickly developed to the high standard required of a leading academic journal.
The submissions for the RSRS Early Career mentored section are evaluated for their originality, novelty and quality. Successful paper proposals will be invited to submit a full paper (max 5000 words) Using a constructive review process, accepted authors are supported by a named corresponding editor who provides feedback to guide the author towards a high-quality article. All articles are reviewed by the entirety of the editorial team prior to publication. Editor/s Specification
The Early Career Mentored Section was designed to support students and early career researchers who are working on their early publications.
This role is open to early and mid-career researchers who are familiar with academic publishing and who have already published in the field of regional studies and/or regional science.
The early career section editors collectively oversee abstract selection and individually mentor authors, publishing around 9 papers per year.
The editor will be full papers editors and will have additional responsibilities within the editorial team such as handling the abstract selection process and / or the allocation of papers to editors and paper tracking in the manuscript system.
Candidates will where possible, attend two team meetings per year around the RSA conference and in the September-October period (basic expenses are met). The duration of the appointment is for three years in the first instance, and the total time commitment is c. 2-3 hrs per week.
Essentials
- A preferably quantitative research background in regional planning, environmental planning, sustainability, spatial analysis, big data, climate change, spatial development
- An established track record of research and other expertise in the field of regional studies and science
- Ability to provide constructive review and support for junior researchers in the field
- Experience in organising activities involving communicating with academic staff
- Ability to contribute to a team of editors throughout the full editorial term
- Having participated in peer review processes as both a reviewer and author
- Ability to organise, prepare and chair online meetings within the editorial team
- A proven track record of supporting peers or more junior colleagues in academic environments
- Representational experience and professional engagement in social media and dissemination
- An ability to commit an average 2-3 hrs a week to the tasks and meet deadlines.
Desirables
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in the field of regional studies/science or a related field.
- Experience in management of calls for papers and of any manuscript management system
- Any experience in mentoring would be welcomed

The journal welcomes submissions on regional issues in economics, geography, planning, political science, and related fields. RSRS allows for a range of article types including full length research articles of up 8,000 words, shorter papers of around 5,000 words and a ‘regional graphics’ section, which capitalises upon the importance of geographic data visualisation in our field. The editors are also happy to accept review papers, and more descriptive papers, so long as they contribute something new. The Editors are always happy to discuss potential submissions.
