PhD Student in Human Geography within Urban and Regional Research

The Department of Human Geography announces one vacant position in the doctoral program in Geography with an emphasis on Human Geography with an orientation towards research in The Stockholm Urban and Regional Research Environment (SURE). The Ph.D. position is fully funded for 4 years and based at the Department. 

The Department has around 50 employees and conducts research and teaching in a range of subjects within human geography, geography and planning. Information about current research within the various profiles is available here.

Subject area
SURE consists of researchers with a variety of interests and approaches but all are united in exploring contemporary spatial processes and change. Our research engages with debates in urban, cultural, and economic geography as well as spatial planning, governance and policy studies. Current research within the profile includes work on: the cultural and creative sector, creativity and innovation, digital geographies, social movements and spatial justice, cultural policy, urban and regional development, gender perspectives, and emotional geographies. Another cluster of current research themes covers the governance and culture of regional planning, the need of expertise for future urban and regional planners, urban governance and climate transformation, planning and development of mega-projects, comparative research on planning systems and policy as well as EU cohesion policy.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere. It is also required that you have read at least 90 credits in human geography or have another relevant background for the program.

The language of supervision and seminars is either Swedish or English. 

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of human geography stipulates that applicants must have a very good knowledge of Swedish or English. For more information here.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity (ranked below):

  1. the scientific ability that the applicant has demonstrated in essay work from the advanced and basic level, as well as in the preliminary research plan
  2. independence in analysis and approach in previous work
  3. problem formulation and rigor in previous work and research plan
  4. previously demonstrated ability to hold to given time frames
  5. methodological and scientific maturity
  6. communication and collaboration skills
  7. applicant's prior academic knowledge in relevant fields of knowledge
  8. applicant's ability to contribute to and benefit from the research environment at the Department and the research group.

Terms of employment
The position is fully funded and the student receives a salary. Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
