Throughout 2022, the RSA in partnership with Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), Research Centre Global Dynamics at Leipzig University and Saxon Academy of Sciences is organising a themed series of events focussing on Central and Eastern Europe: An online discussion series, an online pre-conference early career programme and an in-person* international conference in Leipzig, Germany. The 2022 CEE Programme will highlight and discuss bridging old and new divides in CEE, provide knowledge exchange and capacity building and networking opportunities with researchers and policymakers working in the field.

The format of the 2022 conference (online, hybrid or in-person) will be decided on in the first half of 2022.

Key events and deadlines: Pre-conference online panel & discussion series (March – June 2022) A series of four monthly webinars taking place on every first Tuesday in March, April, May and June 2022, at 16:30 CEST/15:30 BST time. The sessions are linked to the four conference themes: (Alternative) economies; EU and regional policies; political geographies and re-thinking CEE; societies and culture.

Early Career pre-conference event, online (03.05.2022) “It’s time to speak: how do early career researchers perceive old and new divides in Central and Eastern Europe?” – this ECR pre-conference event aims to kick-start discussions around the conference’s themes. We invite current PhD students and Early Career researchers to submit their application to attend. Places are limited to 25.

  • Participant notification before 31st March 2022

Central and Eastern Europe conference, Leipzig, Germany (14.09. – 17.09.2022) The 2022 CEE programme will culminate in an international conference held in Leipzig in September 2022. The theme of the conference is “Bridging Old and New Divides: Global Dynamics & Regional Transformations”. We invite you to submit a proposal for a special session, or abstract to one of the four conference themes: (Alternative) economies; EU and regional policies; political geographies and re-thinking CEE; societies and culture.

Virtual Special Issue: As part of the 2022 Central and Eastern Europe programme, Taylor & Francis has compiled a virtual special issue to mark the occasion. The virtual special issue draws together papers published across the RSA’s journals Regional Studies, Spatial Economic Analysis, Territory, Politics, Governance, and Regional Studies, Regional Science. It highlights the wide range of novel research by RSA authors, and the growth of Central and Eastern Europe as a key region of present and future focus.
