The selected candidate will contribute to teaching in urban design at Master level, in Dutch and English programmes. The teaching is situated in the domain of urban design, focusing primarily on design studio teaching for a mixed group of international students in the fields of Urban Design, Spatial Planning and Urban Studies. The selected candidate is expected to develop her/his own design studio assignment within a domain relevant for urban design (participatory planning, mapping and survey focused planning, mobility and public space, urban metabolism, sustainability transitions, innovative housing solutions or other relevant topics). The teaching assignment might include teaching evening and weekend courses. The selected candidate will also partner in new curricula development in collaboration with existing programmes.
The successful candidate will participate in the activities of the Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research and will participate in research initiatives within that framework. Research within Cosmopolis is broadly focused on urban social, political, economic and cultural change in the context of globalisation, urbanisation and rescaling. Cosmopolis is particularly concerned with these issues in the Brussels metropolitan area and comparable contexts around the globe. The Cosmopolis research agenda combines basic research with consultancy and policy-oriented research. The selected candidate will be capable to link design studio teaching and research-by-design to ongoing and new research projects at Cosmopolis.
The selected candidate is expected to lead and supervise MSc thesis projects and is prepared to engage in research projects and PhD-supervision, especially in design-based research, and to contribute to research output such as (international) publications, exhibitions, policy reports and valorisation activities.
We offer a 30% position as senior academic staff for a period of 3 years that is renewable. The earliest possible starting date is February 2019 but most likely the position will only be filled by the Summer of 2019 in time for the 2019-2020 academic year.
