Doctoral student in architecture within "solar urban districts"

We are looking for a doctoral student to work in the field of urban planning at Luleå University of Technology in Luleå. The doctoral student will work on the concept of “solar urban districts”.

You will be part of a research group that works with urban planning, architecture and transport. You will acquire unique knowledge and skills and be part of a creative research environment, working in cooperation with industry partners.

Subject description
Architecture comprises building design, urban and traffic planning, where aesthetics is joined with functional, technical, practical and economic dimensions in relation to people, sustainability, landscape, and the built environment.

Project description
The overall purpose of this proposed project is to develop, test, and assess an approach by which (potential) prosumers are motivated and empowered to integrate photovoltaic (PV) in the context of urban district regeneration. To do so it will be employed participatory design methods, building-integrated energy thinking, and environmental valuation all integrated in one pilot case study.

Duties
The work will be carried out in the Architecture group of Luleå University of technology in Luleå. The research field is multi-disciplinary and of both a scientific and an applied nature including fields such as architecture, urban planning, and transport. The work will include the development of a new model for future urban districts. The tools developed within the project will assist engineers, developers, and authorities to plan, design, test, and validate “solar districts”.

All the scientific work will be presented in English in articles in scientific journals and at international conferences. The doctoral position is unique and will lead to a much sought-after competence and will give you as a researcher the opportunity to work in a creative research environment both at Luleå University of Technology and in the organizations and companies with which we cooperate. It is planned for the appointment to start during autumn 2018.

Qualifications
The basic requirement for an education at the research level is that one has 1) been awarded a degree at an advanced level, 2) completed courses giving at least 240 university credits, of which at least 60 university credits are at an advanced level, or 3) in some other way either in this country or abroad acquired the corresponding knowledge. We are looking for a talented and motivated colleague who can both alone and in cooperation with others carry out advanced research in our research group. The applicant should preferably have a urban planning background. It is an advantage if you have previous experience from research and publication.

The applicant is expected to carry out her/his doctoral studies full-time in connection with the project described. Luleå University of Technology undertakes to provide excellent working conditions, active support from a qualified supervisory group and a proposal for a doctoral education that will lead to a doctor’s degree in Architecture. An active participation in the further development of the international research society will be encouraged. The applicant shall be a good team-player with a good knowledge of both oral and written English. Knowledge of the Swedish language is not a requirement, but the applicant should be prepared within a few years to be able to carry out tasks which require an understanding of Swedish.

Information
The position holds a fulltime fixed-termed employment, regulated by the Swedish Higher Education ordinance. Departmental duties (e.g. teaching) up to 20% can also occur.
